Chest Doctor for Patients from Barwala

Barwala and the villages around it

Barwala, in the eastern part of Panchkula district, is widely known across north India for its poultry farms. Along with farming, small trade and the villages towards Raipur Rani and Morni, poultry is what keeps much of the area going.

That way of life brings some specific lung problems with it. This page is for families from Barwala and nearby villages who need a chest specialist. It explains the common problems we see from the area and how to reach Dr. Manan Bedi's clinic in Sector 20, Panchkula.

Lung problems linked to work and village life

Dust from poultry sheds

Poultry sheds are full of fine dust made up of feathers, droppings, feed and bedding material. People who work inside sheds every day, especially without a mask, breathe in a lot of it. Over months and years this can cause:

  • A cough that is worse during or after work
  • Wheezing and chest tightness, sometimes asthma that starts in adulthood
  • Repeated chest infections
  • In some people, an allergic reaction deep in the lungs (hypersensitivity pneumonitis) that can lead to scarring

The early signs are easy to ignore because everyone in the shed coughs a bit. If your breathing has been getting worse, or you get fever and breathlessness after working in the shed, get checked. Our page on lung fibrosis (ILD) explains the reaction to bird dust in more detail.

Simple protection: a proper N95 mask during cleaning and feed handling, good ventilation in the shed, and wetting dry litter before shifting it all reduce how much dust reaches the lungs.

Crop residue smoke

In October and November, smoke from burning crop residue hangs over the fields. Children, elderly people and anyone with asthma or COPD feel it first. See our pollution and breathing guide.

Chulha smoke

Many older women in the villages around Barwala cooked on wood or dung cakes for most of their lives. This smoke can cause COPD even in women who have never smoked. Breathlessness on walking and a morning cough are common early signs. See COPD treatment.

TB

TB still shows up in every community. A cough of more than two weeks with evening fever, weight loss or night sweats should be tested properly. Treatment is free under the government programme and works well when taken fully. See TB treatment.

Farm work and allergy

Threshing, handling grain and hay, and working around stored feed can trigger sneezing, cough and asthma in people with sensitive airways. See allergy care.

Frequently Asked Questions about Barwala

Can working in a poultry farm damage the lungs?

Yes. Poultry-shed dust contains feathers, droppings and feed particles. Breathing it regularly can cause chronic cough, asthma, repeated chest infections and, in some people, an allergic lung reaction that can lead to scarring.

Wearing a well-fitted N95 mask during cleaning and feed handling, keeping sheds well ventilated, and dampening dry litter before moving it all reduce dust exposure.

The clinic is in Sector 20, Panchkula. From Barwala the drive usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Yes. Under the National TB Elimination Programme, TB medicines are provided free of cost, and patients may be eligible for nutritional support.
